In case of an emergency


If you are involved in an emergency, you should:

  • Dial 112 or ensure that someone else will dial 112 if people are in danger or someone has been injured
  • Not expose yourself or anyone else to unnecessary danger
  • Try to keep calm and help other people doing the same
  • Follow the instructions given by rescuers and police

In case of an accident situation close to you

If you are staying close to an accident situation, and you feel unsafe, the most sensible thing would often be to:

  • Go inside for safety
  • Stay inside until you feel safe
  • Try to get information on what is going on, by radio, mobile phone, the Internet or some other means of communication

In case of a crisis situation in your community

There are a number of things that you could do to be prepared in time if a crisis situation should arise in the area around your home. You may learn:

  • How to turn off the water, gas and power supplies to your house or flat
  • Whether there are elderly or handicapped people in your neighbourhood that you can help

In addition, you may consider and plan:

  • How your children will get home from school
  • How to contact the family during the crisis

Things you should have in your home so that you and your family are prepared in case you need to stay at home for a prolonged period of time:

  • Food and water
  • Prescription drugs
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Torch and extra batteries, candles and matches
  • First-aid kit
  • Mobile phone
